Plan your journey to Egypt’s most remote oasis: salt lakes, Cleopatra’s Spring, Shali Fortress and Amazigh culture on the edge of the Great Sand Sea.
Siwa is Egypt’s most remote and most rewarding oasis, a Berber (Amazigh) town of palm groves, salt lakes and freshwater springs near the Libyan border, closer to the Great Sand Sea than to the Nile. It has its own language, its own food, and a pace of life that has survived precisely because of the 8-9 hour journey it takes to get here.
Days in Siwa follow the water: floating in impossibly blue salt lakes, rinsing off in Cleopatra’s Spring, and watching the sun set from Fatnas Island. In between are the mud-brick ruins of Shali Fortress, the rock tombs of the Mountain of the Dead, and 4x4 runs into the dunes of the Great Sand Sea.
Give Siwa at least three days: it is a destination in its own right, not a day trip. Pair it with Bahariya if you want the full Western Desert story.

01Siwa’s turquoise salt pools are so dense you float without trying, the oasis’s signature experience. Rinse off in a freshwater spring afterwards.
02The most famous of Siwa’s springs: a deep, clear stone pool ringed by palms and cafés, perfect after a dusty morning of exploring.
03The melted mud-brick old town rising over Siwa. Climb it at golden hour for views across the palm groves to the salt lakes.
04A honeycomb of rock-cut tombs from the 26th Dynasty and Ptolemaic era, with painted chambers and a panorama over the whole oasis.
05A palm-fringed islet on the salt lake where the whole town seems to gather for sunset tea. Bring a camera. The light is unreal.
06Dune-bashing, sandboarding and hot-spring stops in one of the world’s great dune fields, with local Siwan drivers who know it dune by dune.
Only worth it if you are already out west: Shali Fortress, Cleopatra’s Spring and a salt-lake float, but the travel time barely pays off.
The sweet spot: town and springs on day one, a salt-lake morning and the Mountain of the Dead, then a Great Sand Sea sunset safari.
Add hot-spring soaks at Bir Wahed, lazy palm-garden days and a night at a desert-edge camp. Siwa rewards not rushing.

Walkable to the souq, restaurants and springs: simple hotels and guesthouses, the practical first-timer base.

Mud-brick, candle-lit lodges hidden in the gardens: Siwa’s signature stay for couples and slow travellers.

Camps on the rim of the Great Sand Sea for dawn dunes and huge night skies. Combine with nights in town.
The salt lakes hold you up like the Dead Sea. Rinse off at a freshwater spring straight after to avoid itchy salt crust.
Siwa’s dates and olive oil are Egypt’s best. The souq around Shali is the place to stock up.
The oasis is flat and shaded. Cycling between springs and palm gardens is the nicest way to get around town.
The Great Sand Sea is serious terrain. Go with experienced Siwan drivers and keep to arranged routes.
Overnight bus or private car via Marsa Matruh. Break the trip on the coast if you can.
Desert-edge camps and mud-brick lodges cool down fast after sunset. Pack a warm layer even in spring.
DestinationThe other classic Western Desert base: White Desert camping pairs with Siwa on longer desert circuits.

Our experience with Nile Empire was excellent from start to finish. Soliman helped us redesign our Egypt trip on very short notice and customized everything around our schedule, including internal flights, hotels, and a Nile cruise.
