Cairo is Egypt’s sprawling, endlessly fascinating capital, home to the last surviving wonder of the ancient world, one of the world’s great archaeology museums, and over a thousand years of Islamic and Coptic history layered into its old quarters. It’s usually the first and last stop on an Egypt trip, and for good reason: nowhere else packs pharaonic, medieval, and modern Egypt into a single city.
Most visits centre on three areas: the Giza Plateau on the city’s western edge, where the Pyramids and Sphinx sit almost improbably close to the urban sprawl; central Cairo, home to the Egyptian Museum, Tahrir Square, and the newly opened Grand Egyptian Museum; and Islamic and Coptic Cairo, a maze of mosques, madrasas, and the Hanging Church that rewards a slower, on-foot pace. Two to four days is enough to cover the highlights without rushing.
Cairo’s traffic is intense and its streets can feel overwhelming at first: a private driver or a licensed ride-hailing app is the easiest way to get between sights, and the Metro is a fast, air-conditioned option for central routes. Modest dress is expected at mosques and churches, and it’s worth agreeing prices with taxi drivers and vendors before you commit.
A well-paced first visit starts at the Pyramids early, before the heat and the crowds, continues to the Grand Egyptian Museum or the Egyptian Museum in the afternoon, and saves Islamic and Coptic Cairo for a slower, unhurried day later in the trip.
