Aswan is Egypt’s laid-back southern gateway, a Nile-side city known for Philae Temple on its island, the Unfinished Obelisk, the High Dam, and easy access to Abu Simbel, Ramses II’s rock-cut temple two to three hours further south. Its Nubian villages and Elephantine Island give it a slower, more colourful feel than Luxor or Cairo.
Most visits run two to three days, often as the southern end of a Luxor-Aswan Nile cruise. Abu Simbel is normally a full early-morning excursion given the drive, and a felucca sail around the islands at sunset is one of the more relaxed things to do anywhere in Egypt.
