Overview

Journey north of the Nubian capital to explore two of the most distinct sanctuaries on the Nile with our Kom Ombo and Edfu Temples Tour. While many travelers see these sites hurriedly from the deck of a Luxor to Aswan Nile Cruise, a private land trip allows you to explore them at your own pace. You will stand before the best-preserved temple in Egypt at Edfu and walk the halls of the unique double temple at Kom Ombo, dedicated to both the falcon and the crocodile gods. It is a day of mythology, architecture, and scenic drives through the Egyptian countryside.

Tour Itinerary

Tour Itinerary
Your historical adventure begins at 07:00 AM. A Nile Empire Egyptologist guide will pick you up from your hotel in Aswan in a private air-conditioned vehicle. We leave the city behind and drive north for about two hours towards Edfu. Upon arrival, we visit the majestic Temple of Edfu. This site is renowned among historians because it is considered the best-preserved cult temple in all of Egypt. The roof is intact, and the inscriptions are incredibly clear. Your guide will explain the significance of this place in Egyptian mythology; it is the legendary site where the falcon-headed god Horus fought and defeated Seth to avenge the murder of his father, Osiris. After immersing ourselves in the legends of Edfu, we continue our Kom Ombo and Edfu Temples Tour to the town of Kom Ombo. This area is famous not just for history, but for its agriculture; as we drive, you will notice the region’s huge sugar-cane fields, which are a vital part of the local economy. We then arrive at the Temple of Kom Ombo, which stands dramatically on high ground overlooking the Nile. This temple is architecturally unique because it features a “double” design. It has two identical entrances, two hypostyle halls, and two sanctuaries. This is because it is dedicated to two different deities simultaneously: Haroeris (the ancient falcon-headed Horus) and Sobek (the crocodile-headed god of fertility and creator of the world). After exploring this fascinating dual sanctuary, we will drive you back to Aswan. If you have more time to explore Aswan’s surroundings, we highly recommend booking a Private Tour to Abu Simbel for another day of colossal history. Or, discover the charm of the river with a Nubian Villages Tour in Aswan. For those planning their departure, we can arrange smooth Aswan Airport Transfers. Alternatively, if you plan to head north to continue your journey, check out our Luxor Full Day Tour to the East & West Bank.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is Edfu from Aswan?
Edfu is located approximately 110 km north of Aswan. The drive usually takes about 2 hours by private vehicle, offering scenic views of the Nile valley and rural villages along the way.
Why does Kom Ombo have two entrances?
The temple was designed to worship two gods equally. The left side is dedicated to Haroeris (Horus the Elder) and the right side to Sobek (the Crocodile God). Everything from the courts to the sanctuaries is duplicated to maintain perfect symmetry.
Is this tour suitable for children?
Yes, it is family-friendly. Children often enjoy the stories of the animal-headed gods (Falcons and Crocodiles) and the “Crocodile Museum” located next to the Kom Ombo temple, which displays mummified crocodiles.
What should I wear?
As with most historical sites in Egypt, modest, comfortable clothing is recommended. Good walking shoes are essential, and a hat/sunglasses are advised for protection against the sun.
Can we be dropped off in Luxor instead of returning to Aswan?
Since Edfu and Kom Ombo are located between Aswan and Luxor, many travelers use this tour as a transfer. If you wish to be dropped off in Luxor, please let us know in advance so we can arrange the appropriate vehicle and luggage space (additional charges may apply).
