About Bahariya Oasis

Bahariya Oasis is Cairo’s doorway to the Western Desert, a depression of palm groves, hot springs and small villages about four hours southwest of the capital, and the launch point for Egypt’s most surreal landscapes: the volcanic cones of the Black Desert, the quartz arch of Crystal Mountain, and the wind-carved chalk formations of the White Desert National Park.

Most travellers come for the overnight desert safari: a 4x4 out of Bawiti, sunset among mushroom-shaped chalk towers, dinner at a wild camp, and a sky full of stars you simply cannot see from the city. Around the oasis itself there are springs to soak in, palm gardens to wander, and the Golden Mummies museum.

Bahariya works as a two-to-three-day escape from Cairo, and combines naturally with Siwa for a full Western Desert circuit.

Bahariya Oasis Travel Tips

Desert nights are cold

Even when days are warm, October-April nights can approach freezing in the park. The camp provides blankets, but bring layers.

Bring cash from Cairo

There are effectively no ATMs in the oasis. Carry enough Egyptian pounds for tips, drinks and extras.

The camps are wild: that’s the point

No walls, no bathrooms, no light pollution. Expect simple comfort and an extraordinary sky.

Check the moon phase

A new moon gives you the Milky Way; a full moon turns the White Desert luminous. Both are spectacular. Pick your preference.

Expect no signal in the park

Phone coverage fades past the Black Desert. Download maps and tell people you’ll be offline overnight.

Two days is the honest minimum

Day-return trips exist but spend most of the day driving. The overnight is what makes Bahariya worth it.
