St. Catherine is a small mountain town in South Sinai, set in a bowl of granite peaks at around 1,600 metres — high enough that the air is thin, the nights are cold and the landscape looks nothing like the rest of Egypt. It is the country's high-mountain interior, two hours inland from the Red Sea coast, and it has drawn travellers and pilgrims for well over a thousand years.
The reason most people come is the monastery at the foot of Mount Sinai. The present fortified complex was built under the Emperor Justinian in the sixth century, commonly dated to 548–565, and it is one of the world's oldest continuously functioning Christian monasteries. Inside its walls stand the basilica, a Fatimid-era mosque, and the bramble traditionally venerated as the Burning Bush. The Saint Catherine Area was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2002, and the place holds deep significance in Christian, Islamic and Jewish traditions alike.
Above the monastery rises Mount Sinai, or Jebel Musa, at 2,285 metres — walked through the night by most visitors so they reach the summit for sunrise. Behind it stands Mount Catherine, commonly listed at 2,629 metres and the highest point in Egypt. Between and around them, the Saint Katherine Protectorate covers a wide area of granite valleys, Bedouin gardens and walking routes that almost nobody sees.
Most travellers arrive on a road trip: roughly two hours from Dahab or Sharm El Sheikh, or a full day's drive from Cairo. One day covers the monastery and the village; staying a night makes the sunrise climb far more humane, and two or three nights opens up the wider mountains. Access to the monastery and to some mountain routes changes from time to time, so it is worth confirming the current situation before you set out.

The town centre a few kilometres from the monastery, where most of the hotels, the market and the bus stop are — the practical base for one or two nights.

At around 1,600 metres the temperature drops sharply after dark, and winter nights fall below freezing with occasional snow. A proper jacket, hat and gloves are not optional for a sunrise climb.
The monastery opens to visitors for a short window and closes on certain days and religious holidays. Everything else in the village flexes around that; the monastery does not.
Shoulders and knees covered, for everyone. It is a working monastic community, not a museum, and the same courtesy applies to photography.
Mount Sinai is a walk rather than a scramble, but thin air, darkness and the final flight of steps catch people out. Set a slow pace early and carry more water than you think you need.
Card payment is unreliable in the village and ATMs are limited. Bring Egyptian pounds for tips, drinks and small purchases.
The high Sinai is a protected area and the trails are unsigned. Local Bedouin guides know the water, the weather and the routes, and walking with them is both the safest and the most interesting way to see it.
