About Alexandria

Alexandria trades pyramids for a Mediterranean waterfront: a Greco-Roman port city built by Alexander the Great, with the modern Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the underground Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa, and the coastal Qaitbay Citadel, built from the stones of the ancient Lighthouse. It’s a popular day trip from Cairo, roughly a three-hour drive or a faster train ride each way.

A single day covers the main sights comfortably; a second day allows a slower pace along the Corniche and time at Montaza’s palace gardens. It’s noticeably cooler and breezier than Cairo, especially in summer, and the seafront makes for an easy, walkable afternoon between sites.

Alexandria Travel Tips

Pack a jacket in winter

Sea storms and blustery corniche walks are part of Alexandria’s November-February charm. Cafés fill up when the rain hits.

Hop, don’t hike, the Corniche

The waterfront runs for kilometres. Use short taxi hops between sights instead of walking the whole stretch.

Pair the ancient sites

The Catacombs and Pompey’s Pillar are minutes apart. Do them back-to-back before heading to the sea front.

Check opening days

Several museums and sites close one day a week. Confirm before you plan your loop.

Sit down in an old café

Downtown’s belle-époque cafés are an attraction in their own right. Leave time for one.

Leave Cairo early

Day-trippers who beat the ring-road traffic buy themselves an extra hour by the Mediterranean.
